Shadow Flicker Not a Problem for Washington School
Atmos Consulting has successfully undertaken one of the first small scale shadow flicker assessments using Windfarmer for a School in Sunderland. The proposal which was carried out on behalf of Balfour Beatty, involved a small wind turbine for a site at Washington School.
Atmos' shadow flicker assessment showed that the potential for shadow flicker to occur was small, with the modelling indicating that it would generally occur at lunch time when the affected classrooms would not be in use for teaching. As a result of our assessment, Sunderland Council have discharged the shadow flicker condition on the planning permission meaning that the turbine can now be successfully erected.
Principal Planner, Philip Lewis commented, 'We are delighted at the result which means the school can go ahead with the proposed turbine and start generating their own energy.'
