May Brings the UK to Life Following a Cold Start to the Year

After a delayed start to the survey season, Atmos Consulting is now commencing ecological surveys in earnest.  The coldest winter in 30 years has delayed the emergence and breeding of many species including amphibians and bats as a result of lower than average temperatures due to cold air flowing down from the Arctic.

Bird work is already underway and recent warmer weather in May has seen the emergence of great crested newts, reptiles and bats, resulting in surveys commencing several weeks, later than normal.

The full effect of the prolonged coldness has yet to be determined, but Atmos Ornithologists have noted behavioural changes in some birds, particularly Waders, which are behaving in less territorially protective leading to concerns over breading this season.

Principal Ecologist Mathew Hopkins said, 'Our survey work has started notably later than previous years due to the cold snap at the start of the year.  With snow and ice on the ground for a prolonged period and temperatures below freezing, amphibian activity in particular has started later.'

Atmos Consulting is busier than ever this year, carrying out ecological surveys for a wide range of different clients, including wind farm developers, biomass plant developers, architects and housing developers.

We are currently expanding our ecology team in our offices across the Country to cover the increased demand for surveys.  If you are interested in current opportunities, visit our careers page.
