This week marked a significant milestone for Atmos Consulting, as we celebrate our tenth birthday. On behalf of the Atmos team we would like to say huge “Thank You” to all of our customers, partners, and stakeholders for your continued business and confidence in our services.
During the past 10 years we have established a track record of achieving the impossible, stretching the boundaries to find innovative solutions that enable commercially, consentable development to successfully progress.
From our roots established in the onshore wind energy sector, we have grown to be a multi-disciplinary consultancy practice, offering solutions across a multitude of sectors including: residential, retail and industrial development, energy generation, transmission and distribution, road, rail and water infrastructure and minerals and waste.
With our strategically placed offices, supported by a network of associate partners, we have worked on a huge number of projects and developments across the UK and Ireland. Whilst there are too many to list here, as we reflect on the highlights we thought we would share a few with you.
September 2007 - Atmos was formed. We are often asked, why the name ‘Atmos’? Without the unique mix of elements in the atmosphere, life on our planet would not exist. At Atmos we deliver a similar mix of advice and outcomes that balance the needs of development with the needs of the environment – this is our commitment to sustainable development.
Our first consented wind energy project came in 2008 with the 22MW Glenkerie Wind Farm in Scottish Borders. Since then we have gone to support the delivery of over 1.7GW of renewable energy – that’s enough energy to power one million homes.
2010 saw the launch of our SPIDA GIS solutions, which went on to receive an ESRI Special Achievement in GIS award at their International User Conference in San Diego, California.
In 2011, Atmos expanded its offering by launching our Acoustic and Noise services. Since then we have advised on over 150 projects and developments across a diverse range of sectors.
In 2013 Atmos developed its ground breaking theoretical bird modelling technique, providing a solution to the challenge of survey data that is affected by temporal trends, saving time and money for our clients - later going on to be shortlisted for the Scottish Renewables Green Energy Award and the ESRI Customer Services Award.
2014 - Atmos became a fully independent practice following the sale of its former parent company. Later that year consent was secured for the Coigach Community Wind Farm - the first commercial scale wind energy project in a National Scenic Area to receive no statutory objections.
By 2015 Atmos had diversified beyond its traditional on-shore wind market, increasing its client base in the infrastructure and property sectors. To celebrate, Fergus Ewing MSP, the former minister for Energy Business & Tourism joined our expanded team and clients at a special event held in Inverness.
2016 saw our Inverness team adapt traditional methods to mitigate against disturbance of marine mammals and minimise delays in the construction of the £21m Inverness Flood Alleviation Scheme. In Wales our team developed ecological mitigation plans that saw planning permission for a new School, that was required to achieve a BREEAM excellence rating.
In early 2017, following the submission of expert witness reports, we supported a successful planning appeal around sensitive ecological issues for a 170 unit residential property development in Norfolk.
2017 also saw the official opening the 24.6MW Tirgwynt wind farm in Wales. This was a particularly sensitive site with Atmos providing ECOW support throughout an accelerated construction phase to ensure that environmental obligations were met. From breaking ground to energy generation in an amazing 12 months.
At the heart of our success has been our focus on the commercial needs of our clients and our absolute commitment to delivering cost effective, robust and defensible solutions. Most of all, our team loves to find the clever solutions that make everyone’s job that little bit easier.
As we enter our second decade, we do so with great excitement and anticipation; ensuring we continue to put sustainable development at the heart of everything we do.
